ThoughtsFebruary 2001
That is another of the five priority goals adopted by the GRR Board of Managers in May of 2000.
Every cutting tool I have ever used (knife, saw, scissors, hoe) got dull and had to be sharpened regularly. That is the basic idea behind this goal. Every “tool” that a congregation uses as the “cutting edge” of its ministry gets dull, and needs to be sharpened. Ministry tools fall into two broad categories: people and property. Both need periodic sharpening.
Some property tools are readily apparent. We think of buildings, vehicles, and equipment. However, because they are readily visible, we easily overlook and forget them. And so our tools look neglected and are not as effective as they could be.
Churches need to look carefully at their property tools. In fact, they may need to ask an outsider to come in and evaluate their facilities and equipment.
Does the building look neat and clean? The grounds? Does the worship space and equipment contribute to the worship style of the congregation? Is the building open and inviting? Are the maintenance costs of a deteriorating building consuming resources that could be used for mission and ministry? Is it easy to get around, especially for those with special physical needs? Does office and educational space support the programs of the church? Do facilities, and equipment, anticipate needs 20 years from now?
Some churches may need to do serious redecorating and remodeling. Some may need to make major additions—perhaps a fellowship space. Some may need to think about relocating and building a new tool.
While property tools are visible, and important, the “invisible” people tools are even more important.
Are ministry leaders in the church regularly trained and educated?
Does the church encourage, and financially support, regular participation in conferences and other outside training events?
How does the church care for these “tools?”
Obviously, the Region cannot dictate what churches must do with their people and property “tools.” What we can do is encourage you to evaluate them. We will even help with the evaluation and make suggestions, if asked. We will design conferences and training events that address both people and property needs.
Consequently, two regional events are on the planning horizon. One has to do with updating buildings, and the use of technology in older buildings. The other has to do with training and equipping for young adult ministry.
“Tools” are the gifts God has given your congregation for faithful ministry
