These are just a few of my favorite things at church camp. Church camp was the highlight of my summers as a student, counselor, and now as a director. Camp Moses Merrill in Nebraska was a sacred place where I met God each summer surrounded by Christian friends. It was a place for

spiritual growth, intellectual challenge and self dicovery. (Continued on p. 3)

Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School Sunday

On Sunday, April 29, First Baptist Church of Peoria welcomed, as guest speaker, Dr. Eugene Bay. Dr. Bay is President of Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School in Rochester, NY. The occasion for his visit was to celebrate the church’s long term relationship with CRCDS. Six of the past seven senior pastors of the church. have been graduates of the divinity school, comprising seventy plus years of leadership. The most recent of these pastors are the Reverends Alfred Jefferies, James Middleton and our current shepherd/leader, Thomas

G. Bayes Jr.

The congregation has been given the opportunity to express their appreciation by establishing a scholarship fund, in the name of the six pastors, and contributing to the seminary’s creation of a Life-Long Learning Program. This newly formed program will provide continuing education opportunities to clergy and laity alike. Peoria may be the site of one of these sessions. The scholarships will help to insure the continued opportunity for men and women to receive an excelent seminary education. David Van Brakle, our 2006 summer seminary lintern and current student-- soon to be a graduate of CRCDS, spoke during the Sunday school hour. David shared his experiences and feels fortunate “to study in an institution that values and incorporates the importance of serving society in its curriculum.” David’s response is much the same as a predecessor of his, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Baptist Missionary Training School, established in Chicago, IL in 1880 to train women missionaries, became a part of CRCDS in 1961 to become the Women’s Graduate Studies Program. Joan Criswell, a member of our congregation, is a graduate of BMTS. This is another link with CRCDS for the First Baptist congregation, as several BMTS graduates have served on our staff and others have served as active congregational members.

Camping 2007 (continued from p. 3.)

The week away was a special blessing since my family could not afford to send me, for my church always paid my way. This is a spiritual legacy I want to pass on to my three children.

As a pastor in the region, I encourage every reader to send their children to summer camp, to volunteer, or sponsor a child, even if she is not a member of your church. A week at sumimer camp can change a child’s life, forever.

The Great Rivers Region Camps are Lake Springfield Baptist Camp and Blackhawk Baptist Camp. Check with your church office or the GRR Website for registration information.
